| Greetings. I have a smallish pond configuration - a lower pond that's about 250 gallons, fed by a smaller upper pond that has planting areas around the edges that are essentially just shallow troughs. I am trying to put plants in these troughs, but am having trouble with the plants in their pots blowing over, especially when they are things like cyperus papyrus that are tall. These troughs aren't very wide - width from pond wall to inner wall about 6" - and the bottoms are rounded. I've been using standard plastic pots, but they just don't work.
What kinds of containers do others use in these troughs? Thanks in advance for advice! |

| I'm not too familiar with troughs in a water garden, so I may be misinterpreting things... I've used an assortment of containers. The best ones I've found when you consider price are heavy duty plastic ones, they happen to be black, and come in varying heights. I find them in the feed section of horse/pet supply stores... like Tractor Supply (one franchise). Another type I've used, esp. good for water lilies are black containers used for oil pans... they're good and heavy with low side walls and edges that give you a place to grip. Both these types have no holes which i've found to be ideal for aquatic plants that have to be potted (roots don't take in nutrients directly from water, like cattails). I usually go to the local pond store to find mesh baskets in all shapes and sizes for bio-filter, root-feeding plants, like water celery, etc. |
