| I was lucky and found hardy water lilies on craigslist, yay!! My question is...can I set the whole pot in the bottom of my pond, even though the pads aren't up to water level? Or..do I need to elevate the pots so that the pads sit at the water line?
If I set the pot in the bottom of the pond and the leaves/pads don't reach the surface will they eventually grow up to water level, or will they rot? I've never had water lilies and not quite sure how to do this. |

| You can put it at the bottom as long as you're within the lilies depth range, usually 18 - 40 inches of water a top the lily; at least, that's what I've seen for most water lilies. I've always had luck with lilies as long as sunlight reaches the bottom, but I don't think it is a prerequisite. Hopefully your pond gets at least 8 hrs of sunlight a day; that's important for blooming. And yes, your pads can be suspended up from the pot below the waterline and the plant will, quite amazingly, extend the chords to the appropriate length. Plant the crown and tuber at a slight angle. Poorer soils with a little rock over the top... you could do a search and find lots of advice on the actual planting. Good Luck! |

| hi there. depend on what you have , miniature lillies need to be understandably closer to the surface. when I planted my lillies I placed them just under the waterline,(easier for them to get going) then as they grew lower them down slowly. My pond is 3'7 deep and i have mine sitting on upside down milk crates, seems to work fine and easier to get to if i have to do some maintenance. love to see some pics mazela |
