| Hi all,
I have a sick fishie, my butterfly koi's tail at the base looks like the scales are loose and coming off, he is swimming and eating, but I don't want him to die on me, anyone have any advice? He's approx 12 inches long...and was very healthy a few days ago. thanks, Kitt |

| Kitt, I don't have Koi but I do have Shubunkins and Comets. Yesterday early morning I was looking out my window and there was more chaos in my pond than I had ever saw before. It seems one of my Sarasa comets was pinned upside down with her head wedged between 2 rocks while the male fish in the pond were let's say being very rough with her. I picked her up and her tale was tore up and a third of her scales were gone. I attribute all of this to the spring mating season. She would have been dead if she was in the pond for 10 more minutes. Could it be that your koi was involved in any mating activity? A lot of fish seem to get heavily injured during the mating season. -Mike |

| I forgot to mention that I pulled this fish out of the skimmer a few days ago, she had been missing for a day or so and as I was cleaning the skimmer, she was in there, so it's highly possible she injured herself while inside there but I didn't see any obvious injuries right after she got out. It's been two days ago. What can I do for her, or what? |

| hi there ummm, fish eating and swimming well. they are good signs. If it were me I would quarantine fishie and maybe a salt bath and some medicated food for a week or so, you will soon know whether its going to be all right. best of luck, always a bummer when things like that happen |

| I know a lot of people who advocate removing and treating a sick or injured fish. I am more conservative and I would provide the fish the best supportive care for healing. Good clean water, and good nutrition. Best wishes for the fish to recover. |
