| Hey All,
I've been wondering something about this one fish of mine - I don't know if it's just damage or some type of infection/parasite, but there are several large, white-ish bumps along the top-half of the fish's body and I don't know if it's treatable or just to leave it be. Normally, I might think this was a case of Ich, but the bumps aren't small - it looks like each bump affects a whole scale, or maybe the bumps are on the skin and are pushing the individual scale outwards (my best non-clinical description). The fish's behaviour is unchanged - it swims with the school, comes up for food with everyone else, has a healty appetite, and seems to be acting just like a normal, healty fish (no flicking, either). Last month this fish was suffering from a fungal outbreak, so I did the whole-pond Pimafix treatment, but I don't know if this is fungal-related or not. I just managed to catch and quarantine the fish yesterday, so I've attached a couple pics that might hopefully give you an idea of what the issue looks like. The 2nd and 3rd pics do give a better idea of the 3D-nature of the issue. There's only one other fish that has similar symptoms, but in that case it's only a bump or two - not to the extent of this fish. Also, both "affected" fish have been this way for several weeks, the outward signs haven't changed size/shape/count in a noticeable way. Thanks for any help,

hi there maybe it maybe a case of keep it quarantined for a month of so and see what else happens (if anything). If another is affected ,get it out too and put it with the other sickie, if they both have the same thing , i wouldn't want it to spread. If you are near a good pet store, take one down there and let them have a look at it for hopefully a diagnosis. I personally do not like to treat a fish randomly until I work out what it has, it stresses the fish and maybe what it has will get worse because of all the wrong stuff weakening its immune system. Maybe it will go away. One thing is for sure, it will get worse or get better.

Yea, I don't have much luck with sick fish either. I actually got lucky catching this one cause whenever they see the net they scatter . . . caught this one by hand when they all came up to be fed so don't know when (or if) I'll be able to catch the other one. As far as treatment, I haven't done anything yet - not even a salt bath. Hopefully I can at least get an idea as to what's going on fairly soon.

The possibility of parasites is high. I would treat the whole pond.

Yea, the thought about parasites crossed my mind as well. I'll have to see what I've got that can treat 'em. I did move the fish into a longer-term aquarium and she seems to be doing a lot better - it's got places to hide so she's not acting like a kitten strung out on catnip anymore, which also means I've been able to get a better look at those bumps. I'm now thinking that they're only superficial and not underneath the scales like I previously thought.

This is definitely the prime time for parasites to erupt into the pond population. The water is finally warm enough for them to be active. There are so many kinds that cannot be identified without a microscope and unless you are a biologist you may not know what exactly you are looking at. Knowing the parasites are present, I would go ahead with a treatment. I can't stand the thought my fishies are suffering.

A couple of my goldfish have white lumps on them that stick up like blisters and are kinda waxy looking kinda like a skin tag. Nearest thing I can figure out from goldffish connection is possibly carp pox--cold water brings it out. None of these fish have died from this it just doesn't look attractive. I did have a wakin this winter that got a serious lump growing on it's top fin--like a big red blister. I quarantineed and treated with primafix and salt but it was dead by that evening and the lump had fallen off. If the growths are fuzzy looking it could be fungus or severe ich. Goldfish connection suggests salt treatment up to 3 tsp per gal over a 3 day period and increase water temp in the tank. Good luck.

Could be argulus lice. I can't see the spot really close but if it is a little dark under the white and they stick out like they are sitting on top of the body it coud be. They will fall off on their own in 3 days from dying, but the eggs will re-emerge more lice. Dimilin is the treatment for that and it needs to be done at least 3 times. If they don't fall off it would be something else.

Looks to me like something (maybe a fungus) is eating away at your poor fish! I've had very good results using Pimafix and Melafix meds in a quarantine tank, with a conservative ammount of salt. Though I was really impressed by how well these two meds worked for me, I have read that some people don't think they help at all because they are so frequently recommended by pet shops as a "quick fix" but I really do think they have helped my fish. Two years ago, one of my beautiful koi got into an accident with a faulty filter and lost his entire tail, leaving bones and flesh exposed, and fuzzy growths and infections set in, but he pulled though. It's such a miracle that he's alive! He is now healthy and happy even though he has to wiggle his stump to get around! Some of the infections he got looked kind of similar to what your fish has, with the fuzzy white clumps that seem to eat into the flesh. After about 2 months in quarantine with a daily treatment of Pimafix and Melafix and frequent water changes and a bit of salt, he looks perfect now (well, except for the part where he doesn't have a tail). Koi and goldfish really are amazing at healing once they get the treatment they need. Good luck with your fish! Hope he pulls through :)
