 o
Grubex around pond?

Does anyone know if it is at all safe to use Grubex grub control around the pond area? Lawn needs the treatment but worried about it affecting the pond.
Thanks.

Does water run off from the lawn to the pond? If so, I would not use it. What does the label say about safety for aquatics?

The following is in the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet required by the US government) from the manufacturer of Grubex.

"12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Ecotoxicity effects: No data is available on the product itself.
Persistence and degradability: Inherently biodegradable. Non-persistent.
Bioaccumulative potential: No information available.
Mobility: Resists leaching. Slightly water contaminating.
Aquatic toxicity: Toxic to fish and other water organisms.
Additional ecological information: Do not contaminate water sources when disposing of equipment washwaters. Do not apply directly to
lakes, streams, or ponds."

If you have raccoons they will wash grubs and other food they dig up in the pond, so be careful where you use it.

If I were wanting to get rid of grubs I'd get me an armadillo. :-) Just joking - well not really; I like armadillos even if they can carry leprosy.

Really, though, if I wanted to get rid of grubs, I would choose Bacillus thuringiensis; I think it is also called Milky Spore. It is not as fast acting as Grubex probably is, but, as far as I know, it is safe. I believe it is the same Bacillus that is used in Mosquito Dunks, or at least a close relative.
