what is the name of a series of small pools?

At Cranbrook Gardens in Michigan, near the amphitheatre they have a series of small pools, about 12, where the water trickles from one pool down into the next, ending in a larger pool. The last time I went it was not working, but I am interest in the structure's name. I have also seen this same idea on a much larger scale in books. Thanks for any info you can give me.

I give up.

The terms 'tarn' & 'cirque' were my first thoughts. Neither is correct. The *common* phraseolgoy is 'fish ladder', the means by which salmon (for example) swim upstream to spawn.

I'll be interested to see the correct answer to your question.
