Kill mold on water chestnuts?

I purchased some fresh water chestnuts in the hopes of growing them. I don't have an outdoor garden, so I was planning to grow just one plant indoors in a large vase. Right now I have six of them sitting in water under a grow light to sprout them, and I will keep whichever looks the best.

Unfortunately, while many of them are beginning to show growth, many have also started to grow some white/green mold. I change the water every day, but I can't think of what else to do. Is there anything I can put in the water to kill the mold without killing the plants? And short of buying an aquarium filter, is there anything I can do to keep from having to change the water so often once the plant is established? (I have some carbon filter cartridges on hand, could I put those in or something?)
