Koi Do Eat Toadpoles

I never thought they did. But today Jenny and I were watching the little critters in my pond. One swam and landed on a big Koi's nose and he ate it! Never saw that before. Now we know.

For sure, they will gobble tadpoles up like popcorn!
They even swallowed up a couple of hundred toad tadpoles that we put in one of my ponds, a few years ago, without a problem and toad tadpoles taste bitter.

We made a floating "tadpole nursery" out of a fine weave basket, to keep the Green frog and Leopard frog spawn/tadpoles safe from being fish food.

Two summers ago we caught tons of tadpoles and put them in our pond and we'd not see them again... then as I put in another group I watched all our koi out going nuts.. yep they thought I was feeding them froggy treats..

I only have one baby koi and the rest are goldfish, but so far I've seen both the koi and goldies slurp them up, but it doesn't take long for them to shoot them back out. One poor tad was cannoned halfway across the pond and landed on a rock, but it was okay and wiggled back into the water.

It may be that they are spoilt. I still have hundreds and hundreds of toadpoles in there and they are growing quickly. This years "crop" are much larger, faster than last year, which surprises me a little as we have had cooler temps than usual, although now it is starting to warm up.

After years of loosing all of the tadpoles to my goldfish, last year I placed a piece of plastic fence in a section of the pond to keep the fish from getting to the tadpoles. The fence holes were small enough to block the goldfish, but the tadpoles swam through the fence one by one until they were all gone.

My koi and goldfish are swimming right over 70 or so tadpoles on a rock in the pond, they seem to be saying "Welcome to the Pond". It's been 48 hours now and they are not biting! Of the approx. 5000 toad eggs, about 500-600 remained in the pond and I suspect I will have LOTS of toads.

The easiest thing to do is just build a small pond for the tadpoles and keep a few small goldfish to eat the mosquitos .
