Does any one know if there is a link to increased bat visiting and ponds ? I heard they do like to live near a still water source (we all like a cool drink now and again.) Have any of you noticed an increase in bats, or have any of you had them move into your house, when you installed your pond ?

We have a bat house, but so far no bats :( Our son build a big bat house that is suppose to house hundreds of bats. So far he has only gotten one bat, comes out at dusk and swoops around his yard. he named him BRUCE :)

I certainly have to agree with you concerning bats and water. The issue however is not with the pond but with our pool. In the summer if you are not out of the pool by about 8:45pm you better be prepared to experience the dive bombing bats. For about 15 minutes when the sunsets the pool is theirs. -Mike

You named the bat "Bruce"? Would his last name happen to be "Wayne"?

Several years ago (when I just put my pond in) I had a pair of bats that would arrive at dusk. They would skim the water. Don't know if they were drinking or eating bugs. I would sit on my swing in the evenings and wait for them to come. My family had a fit and kept telling me I was going to get bit. But the bats never even batted an eyelash at me lol. They were around for 2 years. I was even thinking of having a bat house put on my chimney. Then just like that they left. We had huge ash trees cut down in our neighborhood due to the ash borer beetles. Maybe that's where they were hanging around lol. I sure do miss them. Jenny

I think they like to house in a sunny spot. We have too many big trees shading our house, that's why I think our bat house remains unrented. On night (several years ago) I was on our deck at night. We have a Pergola with pots of hanging baskets. I spotted a leaf in one of the baskets, and went over to toss it out. I picked up the leaf -- and it was a BAT! What a shock I got, I screamed into the night like a lunatic... yep, that was me you heard.
