| I need your help. It gets REALLY hot here in the summer and of course the air is dry but I'd like to fill three water containers with some lotus or lilies. Here are the sizes...you recommend the genus species to fill them.
Two containers are 15" in diameter and 17"deep, the third is 22" diameter and 27" deep. My past attempts started off ok, but I think the water gets pretty warm in the relentless sun here so my tropical water lilies turned to mush and my pygmy lotus had glorious leaves which would dry out in a day after emerging from the water. Maybe in Phoenix the full sun recommendations for most lilies should be part sun? The one success I had was goldfish. They didn't seem to mind the warmer water. I'm open to your suggestions regarding plants, pumps, filters, fish.....these 3 pots look a little lonely sitting in the yard with just water in them. |

| You answered your own question. In zone 9, you can put plants that require full sun in partial sun or even shade. I had night bloomers last year in a mostly shady pond that grew well and bloomed like mad. So, you had the right plants, just the wrong sun intensity. |

| pondmaninal Thanks for the info regarding location in shade for night-bloomers in Phoenix. Did you purchase your plants locally or order over the internet? |

| Actually, they were given to me in exchange for some advise to help someone to fix up their pond. So, it was local. You should be able to find a dwarf tropical on line. All I could offer you are seeds to a dwarf tropical that if you sprouted them this year, you wouldn't get blooms till next year. Do a search for night blooming water lilies and find one that you like. Then check to see if it is on eBay. It might be cheaper. |
