Just finished water tests,,phosphate is high.

I tested for nitrites, ammonia, KH, PH and phosphate. All were great, but the phosphate level was 9 or 10 ppm. I have read that it can cause an algae bloom. Right now, water is crystal clear. Will such a high level cause any harm to fish or plants? If it needs to be lowered, what can I do?

Thank you, Vickie

High phosphates generally won't hurt fish, but it can cause algae. You can buy chemicals that will lower phosphates. I personally don't like to use any chemicals though if I can help it. A friend of mine has high phosphates and she put in a large tank of water hyacinth. The W.H. eat up phosphates pretty well, so that might be a good way to combat the problem.

Thank you. Have WH in pond. Still waiting on the population explosion. :) Will keep an eye out for algae, just glad it won't hurt fish.
