Evolution of a Little Pond

At least a year ago, I posted a "drawing" of my plans for a 300 gallon stock tank pond to replace my little 100 gallon lined pond. Many of you helped me decide on a skimmer and other decisions to be made. While it isn't totally finished, at least I finally have the stock tank in the ground. I still need to put my little decks on the side and add more plants, but my fish are very happy now that the pea soup has cleared. While I loved my little pond, especially during the times that is was very pretty, it was just too little. My limited space and extremely sandy soil were the deciding factors on choosing the stock tank. I was able to triple the gallons in the small space and not have to worry about the sides caving it. Here are some pics to show the progression from old pond to new.

The plan.
The plan

Old pond about 2 years ago...nice, but much too small and sides were beginning to cave in.

Taking the old pond apart - you can see it didn't hold much water, especially with all the rocks I had in it. The liner is from under the water fall that I wanted to keep.

Digging the new pond - very sandy soil makes for easy digging. I did not remove the waterfall. Notice the irrigation pipe that I didn't realize would have to be cut. We also had plumbing that had to be rerouted.

More digging. I had to make the hole big enough for wiggle room when setting the stock tank in. At this point, I still had a long way to go.

New pond is in. Pea soup is gone. Plants are starting to grow, and I can't wait until they start filling in. I still need to figure a way to put more marginal plants on the sides, but since the stocktank is 2 feet deep, I have to hang them from the sides. Also, the little decks that I want on the sides still need to be built. The plant basket is attached to the skimmer inlet to keep fish out of the skimmer. I want to come up with another solution. I don't know if you can tell, but I had to add on to the bottom of the waterfall to cover the stock tank after we slid it in. I like the results.
New stock tank pond

Another shot of the pond. The landscaping is still in progress as well. Some day it will be as pretty as the old pond was.

You should print and frame your illustration!

Well done, in a difficult situation... I just can't imagine soils like those, yet everything looks so fertile.

I really think the ivy like ground cover along the right hand side of the picture, base of house, can help naturalize the pond but I guess you're not going to keep it if you do the wood planks?

The plank-deck will really extend the pond's presence... so I can see where you're going with that.

Thanks everyone. I'm just proud that I followed through with my plan. The main reason for the 2 little decks was to take out dome of the roundness of the stocktank, but I realize that I can do that with plants. Also, I needsomethimg sturdy to walk on along the house to get to the sprinker system control box. Buti do likethe look of the Asian jasmine.

Very beautiful pond! You did very well with your rebuild and should be proud of yourself. Do you have a mesh basket over the skimmer opening? Do your fish get in or trying to keep out tadpoles?

Thanks everyone. I am enjoying it, though I have been too busy lately to do any more to it. Goodkarma - yes that is a mesh plant basket over the skimmer. Before I put it there I would find 5-10 fish in the skimmer every day or so. I don't have to worry about leaves right now, so it hasn't been a problem.
