Floatin Island

a recent post suggested using a furnace filter and foam; I tired that and it worked great, have it in one corner of my pond, but I ended up with fiberglsss fibers in the pond when I was shaping the furnace filter - so I went exploring at the box stores - result is plastic lighting grates made for lights mounted in suspended ceilings, they can be shaped with wire nippers, no fibers in the pond, you can hot glue or wire tire sections together and the foam sticks well within the openings of the grate. Still need to figure the best way to color the foam from the bright beige; pea gravel sticks well within the foam, but the sand I tried did not stick, may have to use some paint, not sure I like using paint - so still experienting, any suggestions for coloring or adding natural texture to the expanded foam??

Umm... I think you are supposed to use the washable furnace filters that have no fiberglass in them.

May not be fiberglass per sae, but the ones I got, one black and one green from different stores, both had the hard fibers - similar to my pond filter material. I think
I'll like the lighting grate, much easier to cut, not messy, some regidity, now how to get the foam to look natural is the next step. Thanks.

Mckool you will be surprised how fast the plants cover the floating planters and disguise the foam. I have used black spray paint for the foam in the past. Another (albeit expensive) solution would be in the future to use waterfall foam that is black in color.

The lighting grates sound like a great idea. I have found that those mesh aquatic planters are also good to use. Just apply foam to the underside and you can connect a few together.
