can a skimmer and a filter be run off one pump?

Am hoping there is a way that I could use my Pondmaster Mag drive 1200 pump along with my Pondmaster 2000 garden filter and buy a floating skimmer to work with them.
I have been reading the Garden Web and come up with the Oase Swimskin and the Velda floating skimmers.
Looked on utube and saw Columbia floating skimmer.
I never really studied before I dug this pond maybe 6 or more years ago.
The fish have survived and grown since then but think they have had a tough life.
Been looking at utube now and it seems that I should have a skimmer. They even showed a filter like mine and the white filter material was completely caked with green slime just like mine gets.
Have had the Pondmaster for the 6 years too and it still works although I kind of think it may quit soon.
My question is, am I doing right to have the pump and the filter both on the deep end of the pond on the bottom? I read in a post, I think from 2013, that the pump shouldn't be on the bottom?
How would you hook up the skimmer, filter and pump. I saw on utube that the pump goes inside the skimmer?
Do you think it is even feasible to use one pump for both.
I think the Oase has it's own pump inside it.
Thanks for any information and suggestions.
