The only one of those that I have is Dauben, and it's a true little gem. It's a small variety, suitable for containers or ponds, and is a very prolific bloomer. I placed mine in a large planter over the winter and put in a regular aquarium heater and covered the whole thing with a plastic "tent". When I peeled back the plastic at Christmas to check on it, it had a lovely little blossom, right in the middle of winter! It is a tropical, so it won't survive in the pond, but mine did very, very well in this containter all winter and will go back into the pond in a few days.

i have a couple of really big rubbermade totes that i plan on using for the tropicals and then put them in the greenhouse or in the basement. hopefully someone can riddle me this, do they need light during the winter or can i put a heater in them and then put them under the benches?

I got my Arc en ceil in a trade and my Graceful dwarf cattails for postage.
|
I overwintered my tropicals in my outdoor pond. I use a heater that kicks on when the temps go below 40 degrees f. They all came back even the baby ones. I believe if you keep the water above 40 they will be just fine. These heaters are for animal watering troughs to keep the water from freezing. Good luck.

Cody, they do need light during the winter, as much as you can give them.

then i suppose i better work on a frame to hold some grow lights!

I have not had good luck with the first three lilies. I've tried Arc en ciel several times and it always rots away. I had Burgundy Princess and James Brydon both for several years. They would grow fine and look great but I can count the number of times they ever bloomed on one hand. When they did bloom the flowers would just shrivel up in the heat. No matter what I did to try to make them happy they just wouldn't bloom. So, I gave both of them away to a neighbor for her irrigation pond. I know other ponders say that both varieties bloom well for them but they sure wouldn't for me. I hope you have better luck than I did.:)

if they don't do well in the small pond, then i've the got the two huge spring fed ones across the road. thats where i plan on putting all of my 'excess' plants. my texas waterlilies order came today and i guess i lied, i thought that i had ordered dauben but i guess i got jack wood instead. the lilies look great, but i'm really disappointed with the cattail. it's one tiny, spindley little fan.
