Possible water bug?

Posted by itoffice12 Zone 5 IL (My Page) on

Hello,
I recently purchased water hyacinths for my pond and noticed something swimming around in the bag. It is a small (less than an inch), narrow, cream colored thing swimming around in about an inch of water in the bag. It has four legs and three way split tail. Any clues? Is this a bug? Will it hurt my fish? Sorry, I still have to figure out how to post pictures. Thank you everyone for your help.

Does it look like this? This is a dragon fly nymph, totally harmless.

If you have Koi in your pond , it wont live long , they will eat it .

Thanks for the response. This bug is similar except mine has a distinct three way tail. It has been separated from my fish. Not lucky enough to have any Koi. I only have goldfish. They would still be big enough to eat it though. I'm just chicken to put it in with them.
Thanks again.

If so, it's a damselfly nymph ... which are similar to dragonflies.

Here's a damselfly.

Oh yea

As far as I know they're harmless ... except to small insects & maybe tiny fish fry.
