Does anyone have a source for 4 inch bottom drains? Reasonable prices!!
I been looking around and refuse to pay 300-400 dollars that's rediculous. |

Do a web search for the brand "koi toilet". It runs around $225 and is aerated. GREAT drain for the price!! AZponds sells the non-aerated el-cheapo drain for $90. they do work but are not nearly as good....I have them in my ponds and really wish I had spent the extra money on aerated drains.

Try Koi Village. They have some under $100.

I used 4" ABS sewer pipe, three rocks to give me 1/2 inch space and a flat rock on top. Rocks were free. If it makes you feel better, i'll ship you 4 rocks for $89.99 plus shipping and handling. Poppa

The ones Koi village sells are exactly the same one I have used in all my ponds so far. good drains...but not aerated. When I built the ponds, I did not understand the reasoning behind aerated drains.....I thought they were just for aeration. Actually, the action of the rising bubbles draws all the crud from the pond floor WAY better than a non aerated drain. The currents created by air on the drains is just amazing. Plus you get the added benefit of aeration. On my new pond, I'll put the air pump that powers the drains on a switch, so when I am feeding or want to just watch the fish, I can easily switch the air pump off.

Interesting. Are you saying there's a column of bubbles that goes straight up from the BD dome that creats a current? How does a waterfall affect that motion? It would seem that the current from an aerator would be minimal in comparision. What i did, and it didn't work, was i thought i'd place a T in my pipe to the waterfalls and have a small jet of water that would swirl the bottom water in a circular motion towards the BD. DUH... high volume/ low pressure pump... Not enough water coming from the "jet" to do anything. I probably would have needed to divert half the flow. I would think the aerator would be a simliar flop... any place with a video to show this working? Poppa

poppa, I remember seeing just such a video somewhere....I'll find it for you. As the bubbles rise, they pull water with it....LOTS of water. In fact, the action of rising bubbles to move water has been used for many years in the aquaculture industry. Do a google on "air lifts". You can actually return water to your pond using no water pump at all, only air. I am hoping to employ just such a method on my next pond. It is MUCH more efficient. Anyway.....back to the aerated drains. Yes...as the air bubbles rise, lots of water is pulled up with them. As that water is pulled from the bottom of the pond right over the drain, more water is pulled to that area from along the bottom of the pond, sweeping debris along with it. A waterfall injects air into the pond where it fallsm but usually only 6" to 8" deep. Air from the bottom of the pond aerates the pond SO much better. OK...I'm off to find that video. Back later on...... Cindy

Here's the video. You can see the tremendous amount of currents created by the drain.
