String algae in waterfall pump

I have a bumper crop of string algae this year! When I cleaned out the pond last night, I was concerned about the amount of algae on my waterfall pump. I think some sort of pre filter is in order, but am not sure what kind. I have a Pondmaster Hy-drive Pro Series. Any ideas?

Batting from Walmart, and pulling by hand? I'm having trouble here in Tx trying to get rid of it. However, he high heats seem to be making a dent in it.
