All Time Favorite Plants for Watergardening

What are your all time favorites and must haves in your pond? Pashta just mentioned eBay as being an outlet for my water lettuce, so I went to check it out. Holy cow, there are lots of folks selling all kinds of pond plants.

I recently set up a new preformed pondlet near my henhouse. I currently have a.waterlily and a pickerel in it. I have not yet built the filter, so I'm just adding plants for now until the filter is up and cycled. I will go ahead and fish some water lettuce out of the stock tank for it, but I was wondering what the top must haves are for pond plants within this forum.

What are your absolute favorites?

Cheers
M

Well, I'm assuming you mean other than water lily. I like my pond and stream to look natural. My favorite plant is veriegated sweet flag. It needs to be at least slightly damp but will do fine submerged. Even a small clump can be divided and you will then have a lifetime supply. I use it at the edge of the pond and stream and right now in the filter although that reminds me to replace some of it with some color like impatiens which are also a fav of mine. If you don't have some shade, impatiens wouldn't work for you.

Here is a link that might be useful: sweet flag

My pond is 2 1/2 feet deep with no shelves, so I mostly have underwater oxygenators ( anacharis & hornwort) and a water lily and for floaters, of course, water hyacinth and frogbit and, my favorite, fairy moss.

Sometimes I put ajuna and hosta in a floating foam or make a little floating island with creeping jenny or impatients in it.

I also usually have a container that holds water next to the pond and put something like an umbrella plant in it.

Hi
I think my faves are those that get way too big for my pond lol. So I cut back to two tropical lilies. "blue goddess" 14 inch flowers standing two feet out of the water with a heavenly aroma."King of Siam which is almost a navy blue with bright yellow stamens. There are MANy more but I always make room for these lol gary

Water lilly and water iris are the two flowers I deem a 'must have' in any pond. Then accent around the pond with others.
