Heron got my goldie eventhough my pond is netted!

Im so annoyed and upset :(

Last year I lost three goldfish, so my pond has been netted since.

Ive been discussing with myself whether to take the net off, as its really not a pretty sight.
But I had decided that I would live with it, seing I prefer to have my 6 goldfish save.

So imagine when I came home and found my oldest female, almost decapitaded UNDER the water and UNDER the net :(

So far Ive seen glimpses of two of the others alive and maybe a third. Hopefully the rest are hiding.

Im really upset, cuz I dont know what to do now. He went in among plants and rocks to get to the edge and the net was tightened everywhere.

Sad Hanne in Denmark

You may need to raise the net a good distance above the water. A friend of mine actually saw a heron standing on the net to push it down in the water, so it could spear a fish. It couldn't get the fish but that didn't stop it from killing it.

I'm so sorry for your problem. It is one of the things we can't always prevent. Herons do get hungry and are smart enough to figure out nets and other obstructions between it and lunch. I guess bird brain isn't such an insult after all.
