Lily Rooting in Another Pot?

Hi, it's been a long time since I posted in this forum! I've got two good sized water lilies in my pond. The older one I've had for years is growing over and rooting in the other pot, and thriving. The other one has never done well; not enough sun I suppose. Can I just cut the tuber of the good one off from its original roots and let it go in its new home, or do I need to repot it "properly"? Thanks in advance.

Maggie

P.S. If anyone here remembers this far back, years ago I used to post the "word of the week" in this forum and members would write sentences. It was fun.
