Surprise flower on cattail

First, let me start by saying my husband yanked these cattails out of a mudhole on a construction site he was working on 2 years ago! I just stuck them in a pot with some rocks and put them into the pond. They are remarkably hardy. This is what I found last night. I didn't know cattails had flowers!!

You can see where this flower is coming directly out of the cattail stem. WHAT A WONDERFUL SURPRISE!

That looks like an iris to me. I wonder if maybe there was an iris plant mixed in with the cattails. The stems of cattails and iris look very much alike. As far as I know, which may be wrong, the brown cattail is the flower itself.

Sure is a pretty flower.

Yup, that's an iris. If hubby's yank netted a cattail as well, looks like ya gotta twofer! Lovely.

I feel like such a dolt. It is an iris. The iris plant has curled down into the water and back up into the cattails. And to think I was going down to the local swamp and check out the "flowers" growing on the wild cattails-hahahaha
