When vacuuming, how do you avoid sucking up fish?

RE: When vacuuming

hi cweathersby - I just vacuumed my pond last night. Its about 7-8000 gallons and we do not have a bottom drain so we vaccuum about 4 times a year (1 good cleaning in fall, 1 good cleaning in spring and 2 upkeeps in summer). We have a number of smaller fish and all of the fish are so nosey it is sometimes a worry that they will get in the way of the vacuum. What I have found to help is to have someone else tuen on and off the vac so that I can drop in the hose before it is turned on to "scare" them away - they always come back to inspect, but typically, once the vac is running, they stay a safe distance.

We also discovered last night that we have babies, so last nights cleaning was strictly in the deepest water where the babies were not hanging out (they were only along the edges, hiding in the wonderful carpet of algae that has grown on the liner.)

Good luck and be safe, dont fall in ...
