| Hello,
My pond and two potted lily's are three years old. My lily's have never bloomed. Will fertilizer help them to bloom this year? I'm reluctant because I have goldfish and also two red-eared slider turtles in my pond and need to ensure that they are safe. If I can add fertilizer, what kind, how much, and how often? Thanks, Janice |

| There could be a number of reasons your lilies haven't bloomed. Most lilies need 6+ hours of sun per day. How do you have them potted? What size pots and are they potted in soil, gravel?? If you haven't fertilized them that certainly is a factor. Lilies are heavy feeders. You can use Osmocote in the amount appropriate to the size of the pot in the bottom of the pot when they are repotted. That should last you the entire growing season. You can use any type of fertilizer made for pond plants without harming your fish. You can use Jobe's Tomato spikes without harm to fish, 1 or 2 spikes per pot (depending on size of pot) every 45 days during growing season. |

| My lillies are potted in unscented kitty litter in 1 gallon black pots. They do get sun for most of the day, so I don't think that is the problem. If I need to re-pot, what is the suggested medium and what time of year should it be done? Thanks |

| I have lilies potted in the 1 gallon buckets with kitty litter also. One year I had one that didn't bloom until I put it in a container and then it did...who knows. I use timed release fertilizer in my pots. The middle number needs to be the highest to produce lots of blooms. I have goldies in the tanks with the plants, but no pumps or filters. When the pads start to shade the water it will clear up for me. |

| Personally, I don't like the kitty litter. I use top soil that I buy at HD. Its mostly plain dirt and has very little other organic matter in it. I top the pots with pea gravel. Many people use the dirt right out of their yards and gardens. You need to get away from the 1 gallon black pots. I use a particular type of oil drain pan. Dishpans work well. Whatever you use it needs to be wide as lilies grow horizontally, not vertically. |
Here is a link that might be useful: This is the oil pan that I use

| Thanks for the replies! I will re-pot in something that is more wide than tall, which would work well for me since my pond is only about 16" deep. And, I will use dirt from my yard and put in some fertilizer at the same time. I hope this works, so thanks again :) |
