what to do in kettle garden after goldfish died off

I sent up my 50 gallon kettle water garden with a dwarf water palm, an iris, chameleon plant, water hyacinth and some duckweed/azolla. Later I added a water sorrel from a nursery.

Then I added 5 feeder gold fish and they got sick and died in less than a week. They got lethargic, their fins rotted, and they got a gauzy growth on their skin. It looks like pictures of fungus problems. I have done this with the first set of plants ( over wintered inside) for several years.

I am wondering if the water sorrel had a fertilizer in it because the water has lots of algae I removed the water sorrel.I'm scrubbing the kettle and changing the water.

Do I need to start with new plants so new fish won't be infected? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I suspect your water either had too low pH, and or too much nitrogen and ammonia. When fish get fungus, it usually means the water has too much nitrates/nitrites/ammonia. The excess algae also points to that. Do you have any kind of filter or even an airstone?

hard to say unless there were a few pics,
maybe too many fish in to small a space,
maybe the water container used should be lined or sealed first or released some undesirables from its surface.
Let a new water pond settle for a few weeks before adding anything then add 1 or 2 fish at a time, wait a week or 2 then add another 1 or 2.
make sure the fish you add are healthy (one could have had problems already and spread to the others)

otherwise there could be trouble
