Hi all! I was noticing today that my shubunkin is getting kinda "fat". I don't know if it is a he or a she and I don't know if it could be pregnant or not. I was wondering, if it is pregnant how long will it be before we notice anything. I have no idea what to expect! What should we watch for or do? Thanks everyone.... any advice would be great!

Shubunkin, Pond Fish and Koi do not get pregnant. Some tropical fish do have their babies live. Shubunkins and such become Gravid "filled with eggs". When they are ready to lay the eggs they will put out a scent for the males. The males will begin to chase her and bump her to make her lay the eggs. As the eggs are expelled the males will spray their "milt" or sperm to fertilize the eggs. The adult fish will feast on all the eggs they can get to. So if you want to have babies you need to provide plenty of plants for the eggs to adhere to and then for the babies to hide in. You can put spawning mops in the pond for the eggs to cling to and then take them out right away and put them in a tub or bucket of water for the eggs to hatch unharmed. So you need to watch for a lot of chasing bumping and nudging activity.

Well they seem to be "following" her but not really bumping (yet). How long will it be before she starts to lay the eggs? I only noticed her fat yesterday and today.

You could try googling spawing shubunkin to see if there is some kind of a timeline available. The key words are as pikecoe said, "chasing, bumping and nudging" I don't know when she will start laying the eggs but you will notice the behavior if you spend any time at the pond. Another thing you might notice is foamy water.

So, my fat little shubunkin doesn't look so fat anymore and the chasing seems to have stopped. I don't see any eggs or babies anywhere so I have no idea what's happening. I guess if that was the problem I'll see some little fishies swimming around in a few weeks maybe??

Hi everyone!! So it's been about 6 weeks since we thought our little shubunkin "Shadow" looked pregnant. The two comets definately banged her around quite a bit and then all of a sudden she wasn't fat any more. We figured we were either wrong or all the eggs got eaten..... Until today Carlos was cleaning the filter and sure enough this little black fish darted out from under a plant. It's soooo cute! It's about 2 inches long and swims around with all the big guys! Wonder if there are any others??

Lori, I just noticed 3 little fish I hadn't seen before when the sun was shining just right into the pond, so maybe you will be surprised one day with more. Anne

Ahhhh... so happy! We just found 2 more so that makes 3! (so far) We'll have to have a better look in the daylight tomorrow! :) They're so cute. One is definately bigger than the other two but still under 2 inches. Now that I'm seeing them better I see that they are probably only about an inch and a half long. It's funny how the 3 of them sort of stick together too and the "mother" actually follows them around. She doesn't chase them just sort of follows them. Do fish know that they're their babies? |
