Pond for Just Two Fish, Without a Filter?

I have two goldfish indoors in a 40 gallon tank. One of them is a comet about 7 years old and about eight inches long, the other is a 3" fantail only a year old. I would like to give them more room to swim in, but don't have room for a larger tank indoors.

I'm wondering whether they could live spring, summer and fall in either a clawfoot tub or stock tank pond without a filter, since there are only two of them, if the pond had enough plants?

My friend has an in-ground pond that has been self-maintaining for at least 30 years--no one feeds the fish, there is no filter, just plants. I guess the size of the pond and established plant growth make filtering unnecessary.

That is what made me wonder whether with only two fish, I could get by without the filter if I had sufficient gallons and sufficient plants. I could bring the fish in for winter.

What say you, experienced ponders?
