Quick answer needed

Got my new Aqua Art Retro bottom drains in. I've read online where you should drill a 1/4 inch hole in the top to release any air build up. I'm not going to empty the pond to put these drains in- I'm pulling out the 4 inch pipes and installing the drains then pushing all of that back into the full pond... so an air hole sounds like a good idea. Wondering though if that little hole would affect the functionality at all. Surely it would or they would have designed it with a hole, right?

Is it going to affect the performance? I doubt that you would ever see the difference. But it does not need to be such a large hole. A 1/16" hole would be just fine and if you have a smaller bit that would work.
