Watercress vs upland cress

I learned a new lesson this spring. My watercress perished over the winter due to some hungry deer and a lowered pond level while I looked for a leak. I purchased the watercress years ago at my grocery store and have been really happy with the way it consumed nutrients in the spring before the pond warmed up enough to install water hyacinth.

When I went to the grocery store to get some more watercress, all I could find was upland cress. It looked sort of like watercress and it sounded similar, so I bought it and put it in one of my filters. It didn't do very well. When it put out a few yellow flowers I decided to look it up on the google.

As it turns out, it isn't at all like watercress. It likes well drained soil, which probably means it shouldn't be submerged in a pond. That explains why it didn't do too well.

Anyway, the moral to the story is to make sure you are buying watercress if that is what you want. Upland cress isn't even in the same genus.
