This is a picture taken of my pond with a net. I don't like it but I love my fish, but so does the HERON. If you remember last year on my old pond I had post with cans on the top to keep the post from punching holes in the net, boy was that unsightly, but it worked. Now I really don't notice it from a distance. Show us pictures of how you have done yours, so maybe others can get ideas. Glenda |

| Glenda, I don't see any net? |
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours
| | |
| I don't see it but I believe it's there. Through the ring there's a line & the umbrella palm looks like it has something on it. Looks good, I like your pond. I need to find me some net for the fall & spring. |

| Looks very nice Glenda! I don't see the net either, but I also believe it's there. They do a great job not showing. I like your pond! I don't have a net or anything. Other than putting my pond under the tree, I've just put hiding places in for the fishes. I showed it in my other thread, but I'll put it here too.
There's a strip of liner along the top right side (second photo), that comes down into the pond around six inches or so. I've found it to be a very effective hiding place for my fish if predators come calling, and it's not very noticable at all. On the deeper side, there is a straight drop down into the pond and on the shallow side, where the plant shelves sit, is a steep bank of rocks (bottom photo). Any land predators would fall straight in if they tried to go fishing in it. So far so good! I thought my fish had been eaten yesterday, but they were hiding somewhere. |

| Here's a picture of my big pond. It's 9000 gallons and I built it by myself. My other ponds are 3000 gallons and 1300 gallons.

Here's the proof. But don't they look safe? The white comet is Alby or should I say Mr. Alby named by my grandson. When I got my Shubunkins and Comets from Springdale Water Gardens., the white comet was the one I liked least. I was hoping for some reds all I got was orange and the one white. Now he is one of my favorites and the only way he would be safe from the Heron is the net or maybe he would be too busy chasing the girls to get caught. He really stands out in the pond. I like the wind sail or whatever you call it. I was thinking about something like that. Glenda |
shade
| | |
| Thanks. the shade sails make my fish and impatiens much happier in the summer!! I take the sails down for the winter because I worry about what would happen if we had an ice storm. They really do a great job shading the pond. |
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours
| | |
| I love your pond, with all the beautiful plants. I re-built my pond in the early spring and am waiting for plants and the grass to grow back around it. There's lots more landscaping I want to do, just don't have as much time as I would like. And I don't have enough shade. Glenda |

This is the first year for my pond and so for I havn't had to use a net. But who knows? |
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours
| | |
| Vmckague, that's VERY pretty! I love all your wood you've got there. What's that red marginal you have on the left side of the falls? I really like your color scheme! I could use a bit myself. :D |
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours
| | |
| Vmckague: I just dug for a new pond (about the size of yours)with a waterfall. What type of filtration do you have? Can you describe where the pump is as well. ANY advice is greatly appreciated!!!! |
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours
| | |
| Here is my pond in the front yard. It is a nice place to eat and watch the fish.

RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours

| Very nice ponds one and all! I love that each one is so special and so different! And I've got to start searching for driftwood... Thanks for starting this Glenda (I can only tell a net is there by the line and the plant too), and thank you others for sharing! |
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours
| | |
I love all of the ponds, ours is about 3/4 done so maybe in a couple of weeks I will be able to post a picture too. Vmckague what is the plant on the very left of the driftwood on the right side of the picture? is it a hosta? darla |

| Beautiful ponds everyone. Have to recharge my camera and if it stops raining will take a pic--just have a little rock work to do on one side and it will finally be done to my liking. Glenda white fish although I guess easier prey for herons are also a good indicator of chemistry imbalance in your pond. If the white looks pinkish it can mean high ammonia or some other imbalance. I have a white fantail in the house that is about 8 inches long-friends are always trying to steal her from me. Have four white and red fish in the pond--wakins and sarassa comets. I envy all you warm zone ponders who can have their ponds running almost all year--I'm lucky to get 5 mths in. On the upside though I don't have herons or racoons just lotsa mosquitoes this year. |

my bussyfamily6, I think what you are asking about is ornamental sweet potato vine. They are the green gold and also the dark black-purple plants between the 2 pieces of drift wood. destiny, I think the one you are asking about is a canna I got off of eBay this winter. jls04. The pump I have is setting in my skimmer. It is a 3500 gph pump I got off of eBay for 99 dollars. So far so good. As for filtration I have an atlantic 1200 waterfall with about 20 pounds of lava rock in it. I also have a smaller pump running though a 38 watt UV filter. Again it came off of EBay. I had the dreaded green pea soup and the UV took care of it in 3 days and it has never come back. |

I'm also getting ready to install a skippy filter. (as soon as I can get enough nerve to drill a hole in the side of a perfectly good tank) Thanks for sharing. I will add mine in a bit. |

| My little unfinished pond. Still needs some work on the waterfall and find a way to cover the liner beneath the waterfalls. But, it is mine and we did it all ourselves. I love to sit in the living room with the window open where I can hear the sound of the water. So relaxing!! My Bichon Chloe even loves to sit on the back of the couch and watch the pond from the window. Of course, she is anticipating the wildlife that will stop by for a drink of water. | It's great to see all the ponds, thank you! We had a planter that was really lame as a planter, so we turned it into a pond. It's a million times better as a pond than it ever was as a planter.
And the crew:

| Awesome ponds charle7! So natural and relaxing I could spend all day looking at them. I like that the screening is barely noticeable - Is it shade cloth? |
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours

Pond is @ 6 ft X 11 ft; 40 in deep in center; 6 butterfly koi, 2 regular koi & a few comets Since Glenda's original post is about netting the pond: we net this one in the spring and late fall similar to the way Glenda does it. In early summer, I put in two "floating plant protectors" (mine are made by Nycon) which shade the fish, help hide them from heron and prevent the hyacinth from going into the skimmer.

|
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours

My first pond...starter pond of 90 gallons. Every year I add more plants around it as I figure out what is going to fill in. This is where the babies are growing!
This pond I just put in this spring, it's 130 gallons. I am so envious of all the huge and beautiful pond photos that are posted above!! I didn't plant much around the new pond so I could see how large my new hostas will grow in next year...didn't want to deal with overcrowding, plus I have been working on other garden projects. It's been quite a learning experience as this pond is in the shade almost the entire day. I love sitting on my screened in porch and listen to the water...such a stress free environment. Other shade plant variety suggestions (I have poor sandy soil) would be great!! |

Glenda I like the idea of the netting. Is that just plain bird netting that is used for fruit trees? Wonder what the owl would do about it. Probably see the netting and not swoop down? Yesterday evening I cut off a piece of tall chicken wire and layed over, but I would not want to do that every evening. It disturbs too much. Sherry |

This little hole held water and a beautiful Colorado Lily when we bought this place last year in a drought. After seeing that the Goldfish were Happy (place was deserted the two years prier)we turned our attentions on the Lily Pond. Thanks to everyone's help and sharing of ideas it's become the highlight of our day. Now we are getting ready to add the excess of Baby Goldfish. I've found many of the plants needed for the shadey area thanks to your advices and inspirations. Happy Ponding Everyone. I LOVE SEEING WHAT YOU'VE ALL ACCOMPLISHED. Kathy |

Hi all! I am new here...I have enjoyed reading & learning from all your wonderful experiences! This is a very rewarding hobby! We just finished our second pond this past weekend (are we ever really finished?...its too much fun to keep adding plants, etc) I had a 100 gallon preformed pond for a year & just couldn't stand it...I had to have a bigger one!! So here is our new & improved pond! Lots of hard work but well worth the effort. Hope you guys enjoy. |

Hello All, I too am new to this site, I stop by from time to time to get inspiration for my pond. You all have such lovely ponds, very creative and so much great information. I have learned so much by browsing through this site. I am currently renovating my 250 gal preformed pond. I am adding a waterfall & small stream, as well as more plants in & around the pond. Thank you all for all the knowledge you pass along. When I am finished I will try to figure out the picture thing. Seems kinda iffy for me. Keep up all your good work--Dianne |
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours

RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours
| | |
| Thanks Sheepco! Diy guy, there's no liner behind that rock wall. The rocks are those manufactured, flat-backed things, and they're mortared onto diamond lathe over construction paper over pressure-treated plywood which is screwed onto a pressure-treated frame of 2X4s bolted to the cement deck. This three-sided wall hides three, 150-gallon stock tanks, each of which has a stainless steel spillway lip that juts through the holes in the wall. The water falls just perfectly in front of the stones, not touching a one. It's genius I tell you. But four years in the figuring out. Your pond is going to be gorgeous -- already is! |

| Chazparas, I love your pond. Glad you survived a winter season, and can't wait to hear how it is coming out in the spring weather. I have to tend my pond all year long...I'm not complaining though. I had to contend with string algae all last year, but have very little of it this year. Everyone in my pond is doing well and seems to be happy. Glenda |
RE: I'll show you mine..If you will show yours
| | |
| Nancym- thanks, with the long winters up here I love having tons of color in the garden to lift the spirits so to speak. Come late august early september it's almost all gold and purple flowers. Glenda, thanks, It's a small pond only 170 gals or so. I have 5 fantail goldies and one regular red and white that showed up from an egg on some plant so far they all seem to be male and I'm happy about that don't want too many! My hardy water lilies and one type of rush survived the winter at the bottom of the pond and are already hitting surface. We get frost here until memorial day so I'm hoping they'll be OK. I'll have a chance to use the shop vac and clean out the bottom this coming weekend. It is so crystal clear right now I hate to disturb it, but there is a layer of maple leaves that'll smell horrible in a week or so I'm sure! No frog eggs yet so I'm still safe to vacum. The fish are still in the stock tank in the basement, I've gotta get some coverage on the pond before I put them out. Yep we've got Great blues here too, and since I'm in a city...no hunting! LOL |

Hi Nancym1956, I'm not quite sure, but I think it's water celery. My mom visited Kentucky last year and brought me a few twigs of it. She found it growing at the edge of a natural creek bed. It grows rampantly! I rip out a bunch of it every few months. Otherwise, it would devour the entire pond. I really like the stuff! Thanks for the kind words! Loretta |

Zoenipp, I don't have an Apple or use Photo Bucket, so hopefully someone with both of those things will be able to help you out. However, I did just copy and paste the code for this photo using Safari for Windows and Picasa Web Albums. I realized there's quite a bit of difference between the 2 versions of Safari, but you might try Picasa and see if you have any better luck? When you're pasting, does the code show up? Or do you see the pasted code, but then no photo? Hope to see your pond soon. :-) Sherry

| This is my pond. My hubby liked to sit close by and watch the fish. He used to feed them too much. He passed away last month, cancer.

| zoenipp, email me please. I erased your email by mistake. Glenda Glad2garden, So sorry to hear about your husband. I can relate somewhat as have had lots of cancer in my family. Glad he could enjoy the pond, bet the fishes miss him and his overfeeding. After my mother-in-law passed away I got some of her Amarilla plants back that I had given her. The next Thanksgiving I had one bloom outside and it was like she was saying "Here I am" because it was not the normal time for them to bloom And the same thing with another plant our daughter-in-law had from her mothers funeral, a gardenia, it bloomed outside at Christmastime. I told her it was her mothers way of letting her know she was ok. And she was comforted by it. So watch for them and I'm sure you will see some of the same signs. Glenda |

| I, too, am sorry about the loss of your husband. I know of a ponding woman who lost her husband. He had dug the pond himself, and loved to hunt for little critters to sit beside it, like ceramic turtles or frogs. She loves that pond in part because her husband enjoyed it so much. |

| Thank you all so much for your kind expressions. Being near the pond has been a real comfort. I like your name "always_outside". Good one! Wish I had thought of it! Cause that's where I always am. Here's another pic of the pond.

Well here is the new pond with the plants finally growing. I am going shopping today for more plants. I need to get more going before this heat we have had the last few days gets the algae going! I am going to try my hand at making some floating containers out of the foam pool noodles. I am going to try to cover them with landscape fabric so they are not so visible. Keep the photos coming these are great. Gives me ideas how to spend more money!!! LOL |

zoenipp, i have an apple laptop with safari browser...i'll try to help with posting pics in your message. Here's what I do. I open my photobucket account in another tab (file, new tab) find the pic I want and simply click once on the html code under the pic (it pops up a box that says "copied"...it knows what you want..lol), then go back & open the tab where my garden web message is, click in my message box where i want the pic and then click edit & paste (or apple/v). I hope this helps. I've had my apple for about a year now...takes some getting used to..but I love mine. Good luck. Amy |

| It was such a pleasure to see all the beautiful ponds with lush foliage and decorating idea's. glad2garden I was sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. I know he loved the pond, it is beautiful.I will try to show you my little back yard pond. I just took out all my rocks and redid the edges with flag stone. I have added some more of the stone after this picture was taken. I gave away 14 goldies and I hooked up a filter for the side of my pond using quilt batting and ac charcoal. It has worked beautiful and my pond is so clear. It was only yesterday I made the filter. I used a large kitchen waste can with holes on one side and a line running from a 325 gph from the pond up to the can. The rock in the for ground is hypertufa,(first attempt) hollow and covers my electric boxes on a 2x4. It is flat on top to hold my flower planter. This was a joint effort of my hubby and myself. We dug it with a shovel and I hooked up everything using the aquascape kit. Not bad for us ol'folks. 11'x8' with a slant bottom 29" deep. A large plant shelf 10" down and 12" wide. I checked my chemisty yesterday and it was perfect except it has a ph of 8.2. It has been stable at that ph so I guess it is ok. Fish spawned last fall and I had 17 baby goldies, I have 3 koi, 11 goldie's ater sharing with friend and sister.I finished it last July "07". I enjoy working on it and it will change each day. I have a problem with my wh and other plants. I am trying to find tomato spikes, fertilome liguid iron, and potash to see if that will help. I put wh in a bucket today with miracle grow. I think that will help till I get everything I need. Do any of you have a better formula for getting my plants to grow. They were terrible last year too. |

| Well, I might as well hop on the train. Here is my pond that I just finished building. I'm a Masters student in biology and my pond is home to native turtle species (for which I am permitted, of course) - yellow mud turtle, ornate box turtle, and Blanding's turtles. Not sure how many gallons, but the deep end is about 3.5' deep with 2' of mud to create a hibernacula for the turtles so they can spend the winter outside. I have water lilies directly planted into the dirt as well as anacharis and potamogeton. Hornwort floats around and arrowhead and sweet flag are on the sides. I'll add some more when the plants are established...

I installed lighting today
| | |
| I just put in the lighting today. I find myself spending literally hours each day walking past my pond and smiling. It's my sanctuary from a busy day. So lastnight I built a daybed/couch for the deck. With the super-hot nights we've been having lately, I can now sleep under the stars, lulled to sleep by the soothing sounds of the waterfall. What could be better?!

| V mcKague I am SO envious of your waterfall. I've been struggling with mine for years. I also have a biofalls thing. Can you see the black "Lip" where the falls come down or did you camouflage it? (hard to see in the picture). Also how far into the pond (above it) is your falls? I find if my fall "lip" is not really OVER the pond water, invariably some water leaks backwards through the rocks. Therefore I now have a sort of "diving board" idea which doesn't look so nice. Any tips about how you did your rocks would be so helpful (with the "steps", I mean). Did you attach your rocks with anything like cement or foam, or is that waterfall "au natural"? And why did you put 20 lbs of lava rock inside your falls? I have some "biofoam" stuff I bought to filter the water. BEAUTIFUL job you did there! (love everyone's!) Liz |
