I've got babies! I have them in aerated aquariums, with algae laden rocks from pond. Been reading that infusoria is good food source. Could I use the "gunk" I collect off my filters?? My big koi eat it.....Any suggestions would be great! We tried this last year with some success, but not as many babies as this year.

The gunk off of the filters is not good fry food. That gunk is decaying fish poop. The big koi are not eating it....they are searching it for teeny creatures that ARE edible. If you put that in the water, you will foul it quickly. Get some brine shrimp hatched for them. Also google a product called "golden Pearls". It's sold by Kens Fish and comes in different micron sizes. It's wonderful fry food for babies.

You can make your own infusoria by steeping a lettuce leaf in half a quart jar of pond water, for about two weeks.
Good for feeding fish fry and tadpoles.

Just sit the jar in a brightly lit area and watch for the water changing, you should see little clouds of fine looking dust in the water. That should start to show in about a week.
Leave it about another week or until you see a green tinge in the water and it should then be ready to feed to your fry.
Feed them just a small amount, as the infusoria can turn the aquarium water green if too much is added at a time.

We fed our fry brine shrimp and crushed koi food.
When they got a little bigger we very finely chopped clams
for them.
We also raised them in aquariums.

check this out, a little bigger fry ate a smaller fry :(
see the little fry in the stomach of the bigger fry.
