Do snakes eat millipedes?

I'm freaking out here. If you see me asking this on other forums, please understand that its only because I'm freaking out. haha
DH and I were taking a nice little walk in the yard, looking at the ponds, the flowers, etc. The ground felt a little weird to me. I looked down and there was a huge pile of millipedes under my feet (shoes)! Then we started looking all over the yard, and there were hundreds, if not thousands of them!!!
Maybe its all the rain that has brought them out.
Anyhow....we don't use chemicals here, so I'm trying to calm myself down by thinking that maybe they will get eaten by birds, frogs, snakes, etc.
As I've mentioned before, I have that big northern water snake and 2 smaller ones. Hopefully, they love millipedes!
What do you think? Hopefully they'll do me this one little favor.
YUK!! I'm totally creeped out.
I emailed our ag extension agent and he said that sometimes their numbers are really high. He said his uncle once had to shovel them out of his basement! AACCHHHH!!!
Here's a pic of them. They are about 1 and 1/2" long.
millipedes??

and here's some of them on a stick in my little preform:

Catherine,

OMG that would creep me out too. Snakes I don't mind. Buggy things I do. I don't know if the snakes will eat them or not - hopefully they like the feeling of thousands of little feet tickling their throats!

Good luck.

RE: Do snakes eat millipedes?

The New York Times article I've linked below states millipedes release a harmful substance (toxin) if they are threatened or if you handle them roughly. I would be careful not to come in contact with them.

I think this would be a protective deterrent on their part so I don't know if other creatures would eat them.

Here is a link that might be useful: Health Care - Millipedes
