large vintage water well pump as fountain

I really couldn't figure out where to post this question so I'll try here first. I have a large hand pump from a water well that I want to use as a water feature. Problem is I can't figure out how to run the water through it. Do I have to run the plastic tubing all the way through the pump to the outlet, or will it let the water flow out of the spout if I stop at the point where whatever that piece of metal is that keeps it from moving all the way to the end? There is something that keeps the hose from going all the way through and I've already broken a piece on the cast iron pump and don't want to do further harm.
I guess the simple question is how do I make this a water feature from start to finish?

Hey, Kathy. There are variations in the innards of those old pumps. You would have to know what kind of pump it is to be able to say for sure just what you would need to do. It may be that all you need to do is run the tubing through the spout past the internal pressure chamber when the handle is raised and through to the base. It could drive you crazy trying to push it through the base to the spout. That is a piston type pump. If that is the type of pump you have you might need to remove the piston or plunger to prevent it from crushing the plastic tubing when the handle is dropped. There might be a baffle that prevents air from re-entering the water reservoir and cutting off the water flow. That would be a siphon type pump. You would probably need to remove or bypass the baffle to get the tubing past.

If you can't do it, most plumbers would be able to do it for you, but they do charge.

The pump most likely has a check valve that would keep the prime on the pump and this valve would nedt to be removed and since it would be consider a replaceable part it should be easily removed - or at least remove the spring and run the hose up though the pump into the spout

Check valve=baffle.
