| I've read that regular ole muck makes for good lotus soil. We have a very sandy soil and since I don't know where to get regular ole muck, Roses sells cheap potting soil and I got a bag of that. It isn't the same dirt they used to sell. This had quite a bit of bark material in it and after 4 days the water is still not clear. Some of the bark had floated to the surface but I strained that off.
Do y'all think this soil is going to be okay? I went ahead and planted one of the seedlings anyway but have several more I need to plant. |

| hello:) I was told potting soil would not do. the soil is to light and will float and the plant will have a hard time rooting well enough to support itself. you can buy plain garden soil($5.00) and composted manure($2.00) at a garden center even at walmart or somewhere similar. that's what I used with my lotus. I followed a members advice from here as far as planting instructions since she had beautiful blooms. I havent had blooms yet but the lotus that havent been attacked by bugs are doing beautifully with several aerials already and i started them from seed in march. If you get a chance look at this link from a blog i did and hopefully that can help you further:) |

| Yes, I had read several of your posts and saw how well your lotus was doing. Sorry to see it going bad. Hopefully someone will happen along to help. I almost bought a bag of garden soil at Walmart but then remembered those cheap bags of dirt Roses used to sell and decided to get that instead. Didn't know it wasn't the same product. Guess I'll go get the garden soil. Thanx! |

| oh i didnt even see you name before i posted:) yes hopefully they will survive. if not i have a younger batch that seems unaffected and doing beautifully. i didnt know garden soil and potting soil were different either until i got into water gardening. some stuff will still float up in garden soil but not as much. i skim a little off and its clear by the next day. |
