Frog Issue

Hi Everyone! :)

I have a frog issue which may be nothing mysterious...but if I can help the fella, I'd like to.

I was gone for three days, got back and when I checked the net in the intake box, one of my larger frogs was in there - body size baseball+.

He was quite bloated but alive, though sluggish. I pulled him out of the net and put him on a rock. Just to clarify, my frogs normally won't let you get within 50 yards of them. lol

He sat there for a minute, then slid in to the pond and hung out, just floating there.

I came back about a half an hour later and he was gone.

This morning I was cleaning out the bottom drain pump basket and noticed the same frog laying on his back outside of the pond - about 4' from the water. I assumed he was dead but when I went to pick him up, he moved, opened his eyes and so I put him in the bog area of the pond.

He looks perfectly fine - great color and although he looks "full", he doesn't look abnormally bloated or anything.

He stuck his head under a rock and later when I came back he was hanging out in the bog with his eyes open and head out of the water. When he saw me he closed his eyes and then stuck his head back under the rock.

I'm guessing it's probably going to be "bedtime for bonzo" but I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what the issue is w/ the fella.

Could he just be old? would hanging out in the net for a few days waterlog him or something? lol He wasn't struggling or anything when I opened it...just floating near the edge.

I'm not sure what I could do for him but I thought I'd ask.

Thanks in advance!
andrea

Your ideas could be correct or maybe he just ate something so large he is having a difficult time digesting the prey which has slowed him down.
Maybe a bird? Interested in hearing if he recovers.

Nothing I can say to help but sure hope the poor guy recovers. Finding him on his back doesn't sound good. :(

Just checked on him and he's still hanging out in the bog looking perky...but not going anywhere. I am wondering if he did eat a bird (all of my frogs are bird-eaters) and it's taking a while to get it down his gullet.

I know after I eat at Golden Corral, it wouldn't be unlikely to find me on my back, immobile in the parking lot. LOL!

Well, he officially went back one too many times to the dessert section!

Went out this morning and he was sitting on a rock on the edge of the pond...looking perfectly normal...but he was perfectly dead.

So bizarre!

I hate to even say it out loud...........but two weeks ago I used roundup in my yard for the first time. I didn't use a ton but I did have to kill some variegated reed grass that was about two feet from the edge of the pond. I know they are sensitive to that kind of stuff. Could he have come in contact w/ the dead/dying foliage at some point and been poisoned? :(

The most obvious thing is that he was stuck in the net for 3 days (may have even been 4). But since they are obvious aquatic, how could that have harmed him?

Enlighten me, frogman!

Andrea.........I had a good laugh about your eating at the Golden Coral! I'm that way every time I go to the Buffet King! (chinese) lol!
So sorry about the frog. Maybe he was just very old.
You did your best.

Thanks Catherine and Anne. You get attached the cute little fellas - I'm guessing maybe he was old. At least he died looking lovely, eh? "He was a fine looking corpse"...lol
