I don't know what they are, but I have seen them on the rocks in my stream and waterfall.

I believe they are called blood worms and they are okay in your pond. There have beem discussions on them before.

I don't think the worms eat lilies. What kind of fish do you have? Koi will eat anything they can get their mouths on. I have never had problems with comets or shubunkins eating lilies.

Also, there is some kind of caterpiller that attacks lilies, but that would be just the part above water, not down to the soil.

I'm relieved to hear that the worms aren't a problem! I have commets, shubunkins and fans. They started eating the lilies last year but started so late in the year that there wasn't much damage. This year they started early. You can see they have them (2 pots) down to nothing! Last week I bought them some watercress and gave it to them each day. They devoured it! I know I'm feeding them enough. I guess I just have a bunch of vegetarians!
