Clear Water ! and Cement Question

Here are the pictures of my clear pond as of July 10th. I can actually see to the bottom of the pond:

Here Ito is just under the surface of the water:

Here he is at the bottom.

I am still so amazed!

Cement Question:

A couple of years ago I did leaf castings. I am thinking about making some kind of a waterfall/spitter arrangement using one or more of them. They have been sitting outside on the edge of the woods for 2 years. Would they be safe for the fish or would lime or whatever leach out of them and upset the water balance?

This is the biggest one when I first made it, about 2 1/2' long.

that is amazing i love it. it should make a beutiful water fall.

ito is so cute. how old is he??

from what i have read when researching for my pond. you need to let watter run over the cement or morter for at least two weeks. this way all of the lime will wash out. also they have said to change the watter daily to make sure you are getting fresh watter going back over it. i hope this helps. i'm new to ponds. but i thought i would share what i have read.

i also read something about sealing a cement pond. i wonder if you could do that to the leaf casts???
i hope others are able to give there input and help you.

Ito is 4 or 5 years old. He is about 10" long.

Sealing the leaves is possibility. When you make them you can paint them and seal them. Running water over them makes sense too.

Pashta,

It probably depends on your formulation of concrete, but if you seal with something like a Thoroseal non-toxic concrete sealer then I can't imagine having a problem, especially given their (small) size.

Another factor - which I believe Pondbucket was alluding to - is the relative size of the leaf replica to the pond. For example, if that 2 1/2 foot leaf is going to act as a water feature to a 50 gallon pond that's one thing. But if you've got that same leaf replica on a 5000 gallon pond it would have little or no impact. Note that sealing the sculpture should also help with reducing long-term erosion of the cement.
