black sponge algae

Hi all

I have had a 1100 gal.2 1/2' deep pond for about 6 years now. I fretted about chemicals, algaecides, bacteria, and filters for the first 3 years. I added a UV light and end of all issues. Three years of just enjoying the pond and the goldfish in it. But now........

The 20' river of rocks and 3 waterfalls leading into the pond is covered with a 1/2" to 3/4" thick spongey black/brown "algae". I have scooped it out 2 times now and got about 2 gallons each time. It has the feel of "finger jello".

Is this good or bad stuff???? Has anyone else had it? Keep scooping it out? Or leave it as it is "natural".

Thanks

George
