I would guess it's just a freakish goldfish that was "lucky" enough to get the weird genetics held by one of it's "parents"???/

Thanks. I looked at the black moor photos and couldn't really see much similarity except in the fins, etc. Still don't know. We do live in the country so anything could have been brought in by birds, turtles, frogs, etc. The head and eyes are what really threw me.

If the fins look like those of a black moor and the eyes are like a black moor, then what makes it not look like a black moor?

It has a longer, more slender body than the pics I've seen online of a black moor. The hammerhead doesn't look like a black moor...just the way the eyes sort of bulge out of the head on the side. The black moor photos I've seen have a tapered head. And it's much darker than the black moor. Pondanimal, were you able to view the photos?

Possibly a cross between a comet and a moor, or a moor and some other species of goldie.

Nancy, thanks. I guess that must be it. I haven't added any new fish to my pond in 3 years, so that fish is really a throwback to some genes somewhere! Unless it came in on a visitor....
At any rate, I'm keeping an eye on it to see what happens. So far so good. I found another 2" fry in my pond yesterday. It was still brownish and had not started turning color yet.
