Ponds...are two pumps better than one?

My pond is 4 years old...and we built it completely wrong. No filters, etc. So...now I'm trying to *fix*.

What I have is approx. 3400 gal pond with a large waterfall (15 different outlets)...the pump is submerged and it is a 10,000 GPH pump.

I have decided that I need a skimmer. We live in a high dirt area...with LOTS of dust blowing etc. This summer, I vaccumed no less that 6 inches of muck from the bottom.

I do have green water....as I'm in complete sun. I have lilies...but need more.

So...Because of the size of my pump...I would have to buy a HUGE skimmer and is very expensive. My thoughts were perhaps to buy a smaller skimmer (approx 3000 gal) AND a smaller pump to operate the skimmer. I'm thinking this would save me $$$ and allow us not to have to redo all the plumping from the main pump.

Any advice is greatly welcomed.
