Koi and the backyard pond. (video)

We built our pond in 1997, the following year we added

another section that we call the 'dog leg' for the new members that

haven't seen any of our photos -- the dog leg is 6 ft wide x 13 ft long.

Like many backyard ponders, we started off with "too small pond, for too big koi!" :)

hence, the need for more room.

The dog leg is pieced in front

of the garden fairy, just to the left of the dock.

The koi get big and love to swim. I took this video on

July 31st. It shows how active the koi are, and how much they enjoy swimming.

As always I look forward to your videos. How long are your fish? It looks like they are about 3 - 4' long. Beautiful. Thanks

    Thanks bwalters.

Pashta, 3'- 4' no, no, :) ... not that big...
they're 24" to 26" and have been that size for several years. They have reached their maximun growth.

Look at this video, that I took on 6-25, @ 1:15 you'll see that their all
in the beach area which is 4ft x 5 ft...this gives a better
    sense of their true size.

Also in this video we have all the small waterfalls on.
The fish love all these mini waterfalls.
    If you remember
I posted a thread when Harbor Freight had these small pumps
on sale for 9.99...we already had two of them and purchased
    an additional three.

WOW! How lovely! My pond is super this year(it's 2nd yr)because of all the advice I recieve from this forum! Your Pond is such an inspiration, I just KNOW that pond calamities will never get me down for long, not with all the good people here to ask for help from!

    Jane,

Boy, I second that!!!! The support here in all phases of water gardening is so fabulous.

I almost closed up my pond when my fish died this spring but (with encouragement from other on the forum) I "got back in the saddle" and got more fish and am so glad I did.

Joann, I have been lurking on this forum for a few years. Like many others, I LOVE your pond. I always thought if I got the chance to start a new pond I would follow your plans as posted on your website. Well, that time has come.
I have a couple of questions about the details that I wondered if you wouldn't mind answering.
First I can't quite visualize the pumps in the rubbermaid container. Specifically where do you run the electrical cords?
Next, how do you hide the containers?
Thank you so much in advance for answering my questions.

    Hi rhke,
Firstly, let me point out, it's a gravity fed system,
The filter tubs are level with the pond. The water
in the tubs is at the same level as the water in the pond.

We did three tubs, however one big tub would work as well.
You could divide it into sections with a few layers of
various filter mats and or quilt batting to filter and trap
the fish waste so that it does not re-enter the pond.

The pumps are at the end in the last tub, the electric lines are extended outside,
and plugged into an outside outlet post near the tubs.

The tubs are located behind the big waterfall and covered
    with the rubbermade tops.

    here is a diagram...

Thank you so much for answering my questions. I hate to be dense but how do you run the electrical cords out? Do they go up over the top of the bins or do you cut holes and feed them through the sides and then seal them somehow?

The pumps sit in the last tub and the cords just
come out and over the top. We have even more pumps
than you see in the drawing. :)

A few years ago we ordered a pump for 12.00 (20W)
from Harbor Freight...this year the same pump was on sale
for 9.99, we ordered three more.

They're great little pumps, and if you see our videos
you'll note that we have several small waterfalls throughout the pond.
The fish love all the mini-falls.
