Fertilizing a lotus bog

In a recent discussion with someone on this forum (oldginger), I began to realize that I have been under-fertilizing my lotus bog. Its a 300 gallon rubbermaid stocktank sunk into the ground and was filled with soil and about 8" of water. We "planted" it in 2006. I usually put about 4 small Jobe's tomato fertilizer spikes in it every few weeks. But this year, it has tons of aerials, but no blossoms. Is there something I could put into the soil in larger form, rather than a bunch of these little Jobe tomato spikes?
I feel really stupid that I didn't think of this earlier in the season. Everything was sort of late this year, so I thought the lotus was just slow too. But here it is mid-august and no signs of blossoms. I don't think it would make so many leaves if I needed to thin it. (Would I just reach down in there and start yanking out runners/roots??
Any recommendations for larger spikes that would be appropriate for a lotus bog?
Thanks!
