Baby goldfish and winter

Hello all... we've just recently discovered that when we thought our female shubunkin was carrying eggs a couple of months ago, we were right! We have seen 3 babies so far in the past couple of days. They are so tiny (about an inch and a half long) We've been wondering though, will they be ok through the winter? We're in Ontario and our winters can be pretty brutal with lots of snow and very cold temperatures. This will be only our second winter in this house with our pond. We moved in here last November and the previous owner insisted that the pond was fine for the winter. In the spring all of the 10 koi that were in there (some for more than 10 years) had died. We fixed up the pond, cleaned it, got it going and replaced the fish. We now have 5 koi, 3 commets, 1 shubunkin and 3 little babies! Our fish are doing amazing and have grown so much in the past 3 months. We've been already planning on buying a small heater for the pond for the winter to keep an air hole but were thinking about the little ones. Will they survive winter? Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

How deep is the water? How large is the pond itself?

I don't have as harsh a winter, but with the exception to our pleco fish, I don't bring any of them in for the winter. Last year we got about 12" of ice on the pond, leaving about 14" of very cold water. Everyone did fine.

Hi Lori,I'm in Wisconsin. gets pretty cold here to in winter. I have grown so attached to my goldfish (5) of them about 10" long now.they are 2 1/2 yrs old now... which in turn had more than a 100 babies last year, they all have personailty's. Every October I set a pool up in my basement, drain my pond and round them all up and take them downstairs to there pool, I just make sure the water temp is close to the outside water temp so I don't shock them. They like the attention in winter. Wish you luck with your fish..

Here a pic of my pond from this spring..

Our pond is about 4 feet deep. It's only 1000 gallons so the 3 babies have pushed us over the limit but we're planning on expanding in the spring anyway. I'm hoping that 4 feet deep is deep enough for them.
