Whacky Memory - Jobes Tomatoe Plant Spikes vs. Fruit Tree Spikes

For some odd reason, when a bunch of you have very helpfully mentioned that Jobes Tomato Plant Spikes work just as well as the much more expensive pond plant food tablets, I incorrectly remembered it as Fruit Tree Spikes. You know, the big thick ones that you'd have to break into smaller pieces to use as pond plant food? (a chisel and hammer works great, by the way ... breaks them up easier/cleaner)

Anyhow, if you're as brain dead as me and you buy Fruit Tree Spikes instead of the Jobes Tomator Plant Spikes, I just thought you might want to know that the Fruit Tree Spikes work great.

Go figure.

LOL steve.........makes me wonder what else we do that really doesn't make any difference!
Do you know what the N-P-K ratio is of the fruit tree spikes?

Steve and Cath, the fruit tree spikes I use are 10-15-15.

Tomato spikes, depending on manufacturer, are much the same, with a lower nitrogen content than the phosphate or potassium.

Jobes tomatoe spikes used to be 8-24-8 they have now re formulated to 6-18-6 so I hear. I love the spikes and get up to 7 blooms at one time on each of my 15 varities of hardy lilies on a regular basis.

For all of you that use the Jobes tomato spikes in your lilies do you have koi's in your pond? I have koi's and lilies in the same pond and I dont want to hurt my koi's but need to change over to something cheaper then the pond tabs I have used in the pass. Do you also use the Jobes tomato spikes in your lotus?

I use either Jobes Tomato or Flower Spikes and have many goldfish. They are not harmed by the spikes. You would really have to add a lot of them to raise the nitrate levels to where you would cause problems.

Speaking of whacky memory, thanks for posting this because I just remembered I bought some of the spikes. Now I just have to find where I put them. Yikes.

Thanks Kalevi for the info...Sure will help save me a little extra $ :o)

hardin I may have some lutus tubers in a few weeks if you want a few. I dont know the name of the lotus but they are pink. I know you said you live in Ada and I'm from Francis about 20 miles.

 o

Hi Teri. I'd love to have a lotus. How big are the ones you have? My pond isn't very big. I've been surfing the net checking them out. They are gorgeous

I think I found the spikes at one of the garden stores, but I can't remember which one. I'm bad about going into ALL of them. I will start paying attention, and let you know.

After this nasty winter, getting ready for spring. I pulled the hubby out last weekend to haul in more rock. I still have a long way to go, but it is getting there. How did your pond fare this winter?

I have fruit & citrus tree spikes. Are these the same thing?
Will they work?

They're 10-13-13 I believe.

Hardin....I have mine out of the pond they are in 20 - Gallon Plastic Containers buried in the ground. When I take them out to divide in a few weeks I will replace the 20-gallon containers to 10-gallon containers. I have 4 in 10-gallon containers now that I started from seed last spring that I plan to leave around the outside of the pond this summer. If I had mine in the pond my koi's would have them dug up in no time. I have some young koi's that was born two summers ago that I need to find good homes for this spring if you want any.

Teri, I am certainly willing to take them (lotus and koi) off your hands. I wish I had something to offer in return. Just let me know when. How big are the koi? All my goldies and 1 koi are still little, all in the 5-8" range, from nose to tail.

When I get all my rocks where I want them, I been thinking of adding a bog area about 3-4 in diameter. Haven't decided whether to connect it to the pond. But, I like your idea, of burying large containers around the edge of pond. That's has me thinking overtime again. : )

Hardin....just glad to have someone to give my babies a good home. On the tubers not to many people around that has ponds so like the lilies when I divide they are thrown out. May have a few other plants to give you once everything gets to going. Hopefully I will be able to get a few nice lotus tubers for you. This is the second time I have ever divided them since I started these a few years back by seeds. I'm learning as I go :o)

Missa7....I think I have read on here some do use the fruit & citrus tree spikes. You might do a search on here and see what you can find on the subject that how I found this part :o)

Tomato spikes have higher phosphorus than nitrogen which is what you want for flowering. (ditto for fruiting)

Using other spikes won't harm your plants but may not maximize flowering.
