Roped in four neighbours with sticks to scare them in one direction and nets to catch them was really funny should have taken a video but we did manage to catch six fish to be given away.

I use a skimmer net a lot with a long 6 foot handle to get leaves and junk out of the pond so the fish are used to seeing it. In fact sometimes they swim into the net as Im scooping stuff out so I have to stop and get the fish out before emptying the net. They could care less about it. So when time comes to get them out (moving them to/from the basement for the winter) I just use the skimmer net. Also you kind of anticipate their movements - like a fish whisperer - and get the net slightly ahead of them and then scoop em up when they swim into the net. Even so, it's sure a lot easier to net them when its 40 degrees and they've gone into their winter sleep.

I don't feed them the day before, then go out early while it's chilly and they're moving slow.
Put in a bit of food, scoop fish into holding area (large net hamper suspended in pond), repeat as needed.
