| Hello All!
I built my little MoToad 6 and waited patiently for the frogs to arrive. I waited and waited and ... mosquito larvae arrived. I waited some more. Saw a squirrel taking a drink. FINALLY there were tadpoles. They weren't eating the mosquito larvae. I read up on it. Some eat mosquito larvae, some don't. Great! *I* have vegetarian tadpoles! Went ahead and got some dunks which just arrived. But I've also seen something else in there the last two days. I read the archives trying to identify them. They are darker than the mosquito larvae and not as ... wiggly. Move very slowly and not jerky ... but, deliberately. They do not have tails like the tadpoles. They SEEM to be rectangular shaped, but are SO tiny, I can't tell. What do you think they are? Dragonfly larvae? We have lots of them flying around. Something else? I await your wisdom. Robin in NC

I actually thought all tadpoles were vegetarians. Dunks are the way to go. There are many different kinds of aquatic insects that seem to just show up. Dragonfly nymphs are a lot bigger than mosquito larvae. You could have fish fry if you bought plants....

Fish fry? Not sure what that is. But in my family if I mentioned "fish fry" they'd start getting ready to go out to dinner. If it is a fish for my pond, I really just want tadpoles. My pond is too little for plants. Believe me, I've read waaaay too many websites on types of pond plants. The conclusion is my pond is either too shallow or the diameter is not big enough which is fine with me. I don't have the space for something bigger and I only wanted it to lure frogs to take up residence and eat the slugs that were having an early breakfast at the local Hosta Diner. I have planted plants AROUND the pond to provide shelter for any frogs and am trying one "land" plant in a pot halfway IN the pond. So FAR it is doing well, but it has only been four weeks. I don't really mind what these weird little things in my pond are ... as long as they don't get bigger and start eating my tadpoles. Robin in NC

Baby fish are called fry. Sometimes when you buy plants they have eggs on them. I have plants in ponds that are small. One is less than 3' in diameter and only a foot deep another is 4' long by 2' wide and less than 16" deep. Have miniature waterlilies in that one. There are lots of small plants, they don't all take over a pond. These ponds are just for tadpoles/dragonflies too. No fish.

Fish fry.....dip in egg, roll in batter and fry to a golden brown! LOL ....Seriously my frogs love to hang out under my Hostas..that is until the Deer come mow them down. I also have rocks and stones for hiding places for them.
