| I live in the desert, Arizona. I love my pondless waterfall, but it is very labor intensive especially in the summer. I put liquid bacteria in the biofalls every week which pretty much takes care of the green algae growth in the biofalls and down the waterfalls. I do get some around some of the rocks where the water pools. My problem is I clean out the falls and in a couple weeks the rocks seem to have a black growth on them. I have tried different algae off granular products with very limited success. When the grains drop on the rocks where they drop will be cleaned, but the treatment does nothing for the crevices of the rock or the underside of the rocks. My waterfall is on a hill, so from the bottom you look at the undersides of most of the rocks. This is a major problem to me. I have tried dissolving the granular products in water. In fact, there are directions for this on the label. I need to be able to spray the rocks so the product reaches all areas. When the product dissolves it produces a gas, which fills up the spray tube and no liquid will come out. My only choice until now has been to dissolve the product, get in the falls with brushes, even as small as a toothbrush and clean off the rocks. This is not fun on an August day in the desert! Does anyone have a suggestion or a better way to keep my rocks clean? |

| Malby, I have read that adding chlorine into the water every couple of weeks will keep the algae at bay. I have noticed with those fish-less, plant-less, indoor water features in some malls and hotels, etc, there is a slight smell of chlorine that comes off the water, but it is not overwhelming. I don't know what effect that adding some chlorine to an outside feature, may have on birds that drink from the waterfall? Maybe some one else has experience with this? "Horton" |
