Need heater if no fish?

Hi!

I don't have any water in my pond yet, so I may be putting the cart before the proverbial horse, so to speak, but I'm hoping to have water in it pretty soon.

I was speaking with a friend who has two ponds and he said you have to have a heater in the pond during the winter months. Is this right? (I am a newbie, as you have probably guessed. I do have two small water features, but I have no heater in either one and both overwinter well).

I won't have fish, so do I still need a heater?

Thank you!
