Overwintering Cardinal Flower and Umbrella Palm

I tried two new plants this year--cardinal flower and umbrella palm. The cardinal flower is just blooming now. Winter is fast approaching here--down to 5C tonight and only 11C right now--(sorry don't know the Farenheit conversion)
I'd like to try overwintering these two plants but don't know how. I suspect they should come into the house soon as we are likely to get temps below freezing at night soon.
As always suggestions welcome!

If I can't keep my plants down in my little pond with a deicer for the winter, I bury them next to the house. I dig a hole just a little deeper than the plant, and cover it up with lots of leaves. So far, they've all survived.
For the cardinal flower.....I just planted it in the ground around my pond and it survived, but I'm in zone 5. I'm not sure to what zone its hardy.

Thanks catherinet. Do you cut back the cardinal flower? Mine is just one long stem and I'd like it to branch out more. I'll try burying it. The umbrella palm can come inside and live on the window sill for the winter. I wish I could get parrot feather to overwinter but it just needs to much light. At least it's not too expensive to replace in the spring.

Hi Jalal:

Last winter I let my pond plants sink to to the bottom of the pond after cutting them back to the crown. Imagine my surprise when the cattails had parrots feather growing in them this spring. I didn't need to buy new ones. I used a pop-up laundry hamper. Put my plants in the hamper, tied a rope to the handles and let it sink. This way (if it rotted) everything was contained in the hamper and I could just pull it up and throw it out. I know your pond isn't that deep, but what have you got to lose? The worst that can happen is it doesn't make it and you have to throw it out next spring.

Hi again Jenny. I overwinter most of my plants in the pond the waterlilies in the deep end--it's 4 ft section 6 x 7 and they do fine. The laundry bag idea is great!. I'll try the parrots feather this year. It's worth a try! Patti
