What Size of Pump do I need?

Here are some relevant details about my pond. I need help to get the right size of pump to do the job without overkill. I want the most energy efficient brand/model.
House is on a gently slopping ground and three ponds are located along the house connected by a narrow stream. Current pump (12 years old) is made by G.E. and it's rated as 1.5 HP; it's an external pump, located near the middle pond but it pumps the water from the bottom pond to the 3rd top pond where the waterfall is. When the top most pond overflows it goes into the middle pond which then overflows into the bottom pond, via a stream. Current pond produces lots of water but its self-priming ability is lost and it is an energy hog. Height from bottom pond to waterfall is 12 feet high, and the distance is 80 feet and there are 4 bends. Size of bottom pond is 20'x10'x2.5', and I estimate it contains 4,000 gallons.

Is this pump enough to do the job?

I am open to any energy efficient brand/model. Appreciate any help. Hope I've given the needed info. Thanks a million.
Wesley

RE: What Size of Pump do I need?

I'm surprised no one with the general calculations already in their head hasn't answered. I never had to worry about serious height or very long distance and I don't recall the flow loss with tubing size and distance. I see from the pump chart that it would be pumping around 1500gph considering the 12 feet height. If you wanted to use the 2hr recirculation approach then this is already somewhat low unless the volume was more like 3000 gals. I would bet that the 80 feet with 4 bends could decrease that flow a large amount more. If I were to take a guess on my memory, I think I heard that every 10 feet of some size pipe is equal to a foot of height. Try googling some of that.

look into a performance pro artesian.the 1/4 hp will pump 4900 gal/hr,9 1/2 ft high without loosing any pressure.it uses about 300 watts

Thanks you chas045 and Joe09. I will follow your suggestion, Joe, going with Performance Artesian.

Sorry for this delayed acknowledgement. Have been away.
